How to Disable CAPS LOCK Indicator in macOS Sonoma
If you’re a Mac user who’s been using macOS Sonoma, this one’s for you.
With macOS Sonoma, Apple introduced this new “feature” such that whenever you have the Caps Lock key on, a visual indicator will keep popping up on your screen wherever your cursor is as you type (in any app).
Seriously, this is the dumbest "feature" ever. You either KNOW you have Caps Lock on or you don't. If you DON'T know it's on and you're looking down at your fingers on the keyboard, then the indicator popping up all over your screen as you type would be of no use to you since you're not looking at your screen anyway. But if you ARE looking at your screen as you type, then CLEARLY you can already see that you're typing in ALL CAPS (so why would you need a dumb icon popping up everywhere to ALSO inform you that you're typing in ALL CAPS?!)
And to make matters worse, Apple never provided us with an option in System Settings to turn this feature OFF, so we were just stuck with the annoyance. I eagerly installed system update after system update hoping they’d add the ability to turn it off, but alas, to this day… still no option to do so.
But here’s where the GOOD news comes in. I found out how to turn the feature OFF, using a bit of trickery with Terminal.
Open up Terminal and paste in this line:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/UIKit.plist redesigned_text_cursor -dict-add Enabled -bool NO
Hit enter, then reboot. And voila… the annoying Caps Lock indicator will no longer bother you. Problem solved.
If you’re not familiar with using Terminal, I made a short video that walks you through this whole process, easy peasy…
